The �Great� Gatsby In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald creates a main character that can be seen as an idol. He represents the American ideal of the �successful� man, who was motivated by his dream that was pursued as an ambitious teenager. Jay Gatsby is considered �great� due to his drive to pursue his platonic ideal of himself. However, Gatsby�s inflated ego, and lack of knowledge of reality blinded him to a lasting reward that would have given his life meaning. Beginning with nothing, Jay Gatz achieved everything except love, which eventually tore apart his �great� image.
