Challenges in Current Chinese – American Marriage ----- From a Chinese wife’s view Current Chinese-American marriage as an international/intercultural marriage requires more commitment, dedication, and work because of the many obstacles that the married couples face. I have listed five challenges couples face. Early in marriage if married couples fail to overcome these challenges it is possible that their married relationships may disintegrate. Language Barrier: English language is a second language for Chinese spouses. Although China has been engaged in an effort to reform its economy since 1979 and Chinese people know that English is good tool for international trade, English has only become a nationally required course for elementary level in the past five years. Meanwhile, there exists a lack of native English teachers in school. Most of the Chinese spouses, especially those over 30 years of age, did not get enough fundamental English language education.
