There has recently been a lot of debate as to whether Haig really was the hero of the Somme, and he has become the victim of a number of accusations from modern historians. After the war Haig was given the title of an earl and was thoroughly praised throughout Britain as the saviour of the Somme. However, was sending thousands of men to their deaths over the top into no-man’s land where they were easy targets for German machine guns, the work of a true hero? Reports of Haig demanding the offensive to be carried on through, despite losing vast numbers of men have led to the view that the offensive was not carried out well by Haig. For instance the Germans knew a large offensive was on the way just by large British ammunition dumps growing in size by the day, and German spies only had to read the French newspapers to hear of British preparations.
