NATURE In what ways does Golding use natural settings in the novel? At the start of the novel Golding presents the island almost like paradise. He uses phrases like �the crystal heights of air� and �a circular horizon of water�. Golding�s use of language is effective here as it makes the reader and the boys feel more relaxed about being on the island. He makes the island sound like it�s a playground. However he also creates a sense of foreboding and makes the forest seem like a dark alleyway that if you had the choice you wouldn�t pass through. Golding uses the natural settings at the start to make the island sound like somewhere where you would dream of going on holiday to. An example of this is �the dazzling beach and the water�. Even though the boys could have just been killed they are excited about being on a tranquil island without any adults. It is also a place which they have never been before so they go off exploring the island. The island is a microcosm of society in some ways as when the boys first arrive on the island they try to set down rules to keep the peace......
