Mass Hysteria in The Crucible Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Mass hysteria is a major reaction to the breakdown of a society. Mass hysteria is a condition in which large groups of people exhibit the same state of violent mental agitation. One example of mass hysteria can be found during the Middle Ages. 1347 through 1352 was a time of death and despair. The bubonic plague quickly infected Europe. People didn’t understand what was happening with this disease and mass hysteria swept through the continent. People would whip themselves for their sins, thinking this would make God eliminate the disease. When in fact, the whipping would create open soars on their body, making them prone to infection. Another prime example of mass hysteria is during the 1950’s, when Miller wrote The Crucible. America was afraid of becoming a communist-ruled country. Once again, the court system was failing to safeguard America’s system of justice by allowing the HUAC to proceed in its witch-hunt for communists.
