Cher Schuitevoerder June 25, 2006 Passionate Feelings of Love Toward The Analyst vs. Erotic Transference According to classical analytic theory, transference preexists the meeting with the analyst but is activated by certain qualities the analyst constellates in the therapy session. With this particular view, patients transfers feelings, thoughts, and interactional qualities that come out of relationships with their past significant others onto the person of the analyst. The question we immediate then ask is: Where does the line between genuine feelings of love and hatred toward the analyst begin and the transference of the patients� intrapsychic interactional past onto to the analyst end? I propose in this paper that there is a difference between these two interactions between the analyst and the patient; and the difference lies between romantic feelings of love toward the analyst and erotic transference.
