Introduction An earthquake is an oscillation of the Earth¡¦s crust as a result of the movement of two pieces of the Earth¡¦s crust past each other along fractures. These fractures, called faults, represent weak points in the crust and may be horizontal or vertical. The crustal movement described above occurs when energy stored within the earth, usually in the form of strain in rocks, suddenly releases. During an earthquake, this released energy spreads from the center of the quake¡Xcalled the focus, which is the point of maximum intensity of the earthquake¡Xand rapidly radiates in all directions. The energy is transmitted to the surface of the earth by earthquake waves. The point on the surface of the Earth directly above the focus is called the epicenter. It¡¦s the vibrational energy that sways and cracks roads and houses and that is felt as a shock or jolt. About 150,000 earthquakes, or seismic tremors, take place each year and as many occur that are so weak they may be detected only by very sensitive recording instruments (seismographs).
