The rain fell in warm sheets, moistening the ground beneath Tochi’s feet with new, glistening life. He stood with feet planted into the soil, staring after the young woman whose steps took her farther and farther away, that angel who had cursed him with her departure, that angel who had condemned him with her silence.
The trees overhead, outside his high school dormitory, did little to shade him from Heaven’s tears. Spring’s raindrops caressed his dark cheeks, slid down his ebony face like his angel’s fingers had, dripped from his coat, striking the concrete path with a rhythmic pitter-patter. The gray sky matched his countenance as he turned his back and walked in the opposite direction.
The afternoon found him amidst his creations: the convicted computer hacker who longed only to be able to see his children again, the assassin stumbling along in his quest for an identity he sometimes did not wish to have, the feudal Yakuza gang lord who ruled his subjects with the same ruthlessness with which he had cast away his own son.
