Roanoke the Lost Colony Sir Walter Raleigh’s exploration and establishment of the Virginia Colony can sometimes be called a failure. Was it really a failure one could ask? He did start the drive to get more land in this “New World.” Sir Walter Raleigh founded the Roanoke Colony that became known later as the lost colony. Raleigh, who was in good favor with the Queen Elizabeth, got a ten year permit to start a colony in the Americas. In the first years he would send explorers to map out and find a good location to start a new colony. “The explorers described Roanoke Island as a most pleasant and fertile ground, replenished with goodly cedars, and divers other sweet woods, full of corrants {grapes}, flaxe, and many other notable commodities" (First, paragraph 10). Raleigh liked the sound of the area and decided that is where he would set up his first colony called Roanoke. His first attempt to set up a colony, led by Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Ralph Lane, failed within the first year and all the colonist returned back to England (paragraph 11).
