I. Introduction Society today is quite different from what existed in the early 1900's, but many similar issues still plague us. One of these evolved questions is the need for sterilization of mentally challenged individuals. The issue crossed into Canada from the United States, in the early 1920's, and Canada has been grappling with it ever since. In the early part of the century, many Canadian provinces legislated, and allowed sterilization of the mentally challenged, but the most prevalent province was Alberta. Our discussion will focus on the emergence of the Sexual Sterilization Act, in Alberta, and the effects of this Act. The history of the Act is discomforting, and the effects are still wreaking havoc on people and the government today, but the greater surprise is that this unsettling history is at risk of repeating itself. Sterilization is once again being debated, for new genetic developments have triggered old ways of dealing with genetic deformations.
