Language is generally accepted as being a means of communication between members of the same culture through an agreed set of symbols, used, so that it is possible to convey meaning and converse with one another (Cardwell, 2003: 137). Language acquisition therefore, is simply the way in which young infants gain the symbols that will, when they are able to, allow them to communicate with others.
Language is made up of different components. Firstly there are phonemes, which are the basic sounds and roughly correspond to the letters of the alphabet, and secondly there are morphemes. Phonemes are combined to form complex sounds with meaning- these are the morphemes. For example ‘st’ and ‘op’ are phonemes and ‘stop’ is a morpheme.
Language acquisition is the process of human beings gaining these basic units of language. Early language acquisition has three main phases: babbling, one-word utterances and early sentences.
