In the fifth century, as philosopher became more prevalent, one extremely well known philosopher named Socrates became prominent. He influenced and taught many other Western Philosophers such as Plato, Xanthippe, Aristotle, and many more. Much of what we currently know about Socrates is derived from the writing of his students, particularly Plato. Socrates often said that �wisdom was limited to an awareness of [ones] own ignorance� (Wikipedia). Socrates believed that �the best way for people to live was to focus on self-development rather than the pursuit of material wealth� (Gross 2). Socrates stressed that "virtue was the most valuable of all possessions; the ideal life was spent in search of the Good. Truth lies beneath the shadows of existence, and that it is the job of the philosopher to show the rest how little they really know" (Solomon 44). This, in other words means �to know the good is to do the good� (Socrates). As a direct disciple of Socrates, Plato wrote many works on Socrates� philosophies, ideas, and mysticism.
