People are constantly reflecting on their lives and the same question seems to arouse in them, what is the purpose of life, why were humans placed on earth? This question has been posed by great philosophers, writers, and even professors. As one matures, one start thinking about his or her future and what he or she would like to do for the rest of his or her life. As a great Greek Philosopher, Socrates, once said �The unexamined life is not worth living.� If one has no purpose or is not interested in his or her purpose, life is futile. In the novel The Chosen Chaim Potok portrays the inherent need in man, in Reb Saunders words, �raise ourselves above the dust,� which, coincidentally, functions as an essential theme throughout the novel. This theme is portrayed through Danny trying to find meaning through intellect, David Malter trying to find significance to life through his activism, and Reuven trying to find a meaning through religion, all the characters are built upon what they are striving to achieve.
