Raphael, who was also called Raffaello Sanzio, Raffaello Santi, Raffaello da Urbino or Rafael Sanzio da Urbino, was a renaissance artist who had a profound effect on the art world during his time. He was a master painter and architect of the Florentine school. He also was alive during the time of Michelangelo, Leonardo, Aristotle and Plato and rumor has it that after Raphael seen the art work from Michelangelo on the Sistine ceiling, he was inspired to recreate his own art work to become more like him. In 1491 his mother died and his father then died on 1 August 1494. Thus orphaned at eleven, Raphael was entrusted to his uncle Bartolomeo, a priest. His childhood explains why most of his paintings were of biblical stories and Christian influence. The painting that I chose to describe was a piece of work that was completed during the middle of his career. From a formalist point of view this painting was named St. George Fighting the Dragon and is a two-dimensional fine art painting form, which is an oil painting on wood.
