Caesar’s Dichotomy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, many of the characters display a dichotomy. Julius Caesar specifically is viewed from many perspectives. He is portrayed as a strong, confident, and popular leader; however, he also has flaws that make him human and vulnerable. Julius Caesar appears to be godlike, but in reality is mortal with faults and weaknesses, which lead to his downfall. To the Romans, Caesar appears to be a physically strong, undefeatable man, although he can be weak at times. Victorious in battle, he is able to “triumph over Pompey’s” sons and the people of Rome admire him for doing so (I.i.51). Caesar “Is now become a god” because he wins battles (I.ii.118). In contrast to his heroic persona, Caesar has physical limitations. His weaknesses are apparent through his sickness. Cassius speaks to Brutus about when Caesar was stricken with fever in Spain. He was so impotent that the “god did shake” and was “As sick as a girl” (I.ii.123, 130).
