Overall, Randy has made the most transformation in the book. The disaster that occurs changes Randy a –lot, but it is for the better. He finds out who he is and he finally grows up a little.
At the beginning of the story, Randy is nothing but a womanizing, unemotional alcoholic. But throughout the story you see that there is way more to him than meets the eye. According to Pat Frank (page 7), “Randy goes inside for his second cup of coffee, the one with the bourbon in it”, in a part of the story. From this quote, one can assume that this is a habit that has been developed by Randy. You can infer that Randy does not really know what his life is about from the way that he is described in the story. Mr. Frank makes Randy seem very unhappy, as if he is trying to find himself. According to Mr. Frank (page 6), “Everybody knew that Randy dated a –lot of girls and that not all of them were virgins”. So one can tell that Randy dated many people and that the town thinks that he probably slept around because not all of them were nice girls. Later on Florence, his nosy neighbor, describes some......
