Fallacy Summary and Application Paper Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Critical thinking is the process that allows an individual to view all alternatives, gather information and facts about a situation in order to come to a rational solution. When the practice of critical thinking is not properly executed, logical fallacies occur. Logical fallacies are errors in arguments that do not necessarily lead to the truth. The point of an argument is to provide grounds or explanation to support the conclusion. When the reasons offered do not sustain the conclusion, the argument commits a fallacy and it becomes invalid. Most of the fallacies are based on perception and assumptions since humans are not “truth-seeking missiles” (Carroll 2005). Three fallacies that will be discussed in this paper and its significance to critical thinking and decision-making are Appeal to Authority, Appeal to Emotion, and Division. Appeal to Authority (Ad verecuniam) refers when either a person or thing is used as an expert on a subject, when in fact they are not reliable or knowledgeable on that particular subject.
