Export Processing Zones in Asia The purpose of this paper is to determine the positive and negative effects of Export Processing Zones in Asian countries and to give examples supporting both perspectives. Export Processing Zones (EPZs) were established with the intentions of supporting developing countries by providing jobs. These jobs would create income for individual and would give the rest of the country greater access to foreign capital. The intentions of these jobs were also to concentrate the people in more developed countries in more technical positions, while less developed countries participated in more labour intensive jobs. Positive effects of the development of EPZs, such as stimulation of outside economies, creating advancement in the host country and promotion of gender autonomy will be discussed. Negative effects of the development of EPZs reside in environmental effects and social problems such as unstable jobs, lack of worker support, human rights violations and displacement of population.
