Meet John Doe The film, Meet John Doe (1941; dir. Frank Capra), makes several statements about the journalism industry. The first is that journalism is, indeed, an industry bent on turning a profit. This is established in the very first scene as we see many employees losing their jobs after a new editor takes over the newspaper. Thus enters our heroine/villain (Turner p.99). She emerges as a typical heroine of the journalistic movie genre; she’s fast-talking, tough, ambitious, and spunky. She has to prove to the equally stereotypical crusty editor that it is in his best interest to keep her within his employ. It is a hard sell and she has to do some very fast thinking. She does, of course, and her job is saved. This is expected, but the lengths in which she is willing to go are quite astounding. She sets up her “John Doe” plan with no thought whatsoever to the fate of her chosen hero. Her ambitions and her desire to succeed completely overwhelm her ability to foresee any consequences to her new pawn. This selfishness makes this character both the heroine/princess as we......
