According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary prisons were created to keep �lawbreakers� in confinement, and away from society. According to the Bureau of Prisons they were then classified into five levels of security, minimum, low, medium, high and administrative. The high level of security is also known as United States Penitentiary�s (USPs) this level has �highly-secured perimeters (featuring walls or reinforced fences), � the highest staff-to-inmate ratio, and close control of inmate movement.� Its common name is Alcatraz; it is located on �La Isla de los Alcatraces� (Island of the Pelicans), named in 1775 by a Spanish Explorer Juan Manuel De Ayala, because of the number of sea birds there. It is approximately 1.4 miles away from shore, and roughly 22 acres of rocky territory in the San Francisco bay. In 1854 a lighthouse was erected on the island.
