On first read, both poems seem light hearted and humorous, but studied in more detail, we see that they both have deeper sub-text. ‘Mort aux Chats’ is a rhetorical monologue trying to persuade the reader that ‘cats’ are undesirable. ‘Mort aux Chats’ is a political poem and therefore uses persuasive tone, ‘There will be no more cats’ in order to engage the reader. When considered in depth, we see that the poem, seeming to be written about cats, is actually a prejudice poem, and the word ‘cat’ could be replaced with a number of denominations. ‘There were never any great artists who were cats’, this phrase is often used, when a chauvinist, argues his view on women. ‘Rat, O Rat’ is written in vocative case, and is a much more personal poem than ‘Mort aux Chats’. ‘Rat, O Rat’ also has a deeper sub-text, but it is not as negative as ‘Mort aux Chats’, it is also a persuasive poem, but uses light-hearted humour to engage the reader, ‘it worried us that he might learn your name’ and in doing this, the poet subtly persuades the reader to acknowledge the poets opinions. ‘O rat, c......
