The Wizard of Oz
Released in 1939, The Wizard of Oz contains aspects of film art witch make it timeless. “A filmmaker has literally hundreds of different ways to convey meanings. Like the painter or still photographer, the movie director can emphasize visual dominants.” (Mise En Scene p.87) Elements of a film often create a theme or intensify an aspect. By applying Lois Giannetti’s elements of color value, dominance and character placement a deeper meaning of this film is obtained.
Color value is used throughout this film to put an emphasis on good and bad. The color value red is used to exemplify hardships in Kansas and in the land of Oz. The stock market crash and dust bowls that destroyed farms during the 1920’s and 1930’s are characteristics of America’s great depression. Due to clay found in the soil the color of these dust storms were often red in color. The presence of red in the beginning of the Wizard of Oz, and the setting on a farm in Kansas, were used by the filmmaker to illustrate this great depression.
