Catherine the Great Catherine the Great was an ambitious woman who molded Russia into the strong country we know today. She was the one who laid out the economical foundation that following Russian rulers would build on to. For a woman to have that much power in her time was in inspiration to all. Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst was born on April 21, 1729 in Stettin, Germany. Her father was prince of Anahlt-Zerbst, and her mother was princess of Holstein-Gottorp. But when Sophie was only fourteen years old she was arranged to be wed to Peter III of Holstein Gottorp, who was also her second cousin. Upon the arrangement, Sophie decided to covert from the Lutheran faith to the Russian Orthodox Church. She was christened and baptized Catherine Alekseyevna. In 1744, she gained the title Grand Duchess Catherine Aleksyevna upon her arrival in Russia. It wasn�t until August 21, 1745 that Catherine reluctantly married Peter.
