The Reason for Iwo Jima Iwo Jima is one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific Campaign in WWII, and is far more furious than any battle of the European Theater. The may reason for the assault on Iwo Jima is to open path for B-29s to drop bombs on mainland Japan. This one island, roughly eight square miles, has three air fields. The B-29s making bombing runs on Japan normally leave from Tinian and Saipan. Then have to make a 2,500 mile round trip (Bradley and Powers 206). That is if they are so lucky to make it past Iwo Jima�s three air fields, then Japan�s homeland defenses, and finally sneak back past Iwo Jima. The Army Air Corps can no longer afford to lose large numbers of pilots or planes. When all else falls call the Marines. A force consisting of over 70,000 Marines is trained and eventually deploys on Iwo Jima (Battle of Iwo Jima 1). Over a third of this force will become casualties.
