Are you black or Caucasian? An immigrant of a full-blooded U.S. citizen? Americans’ often distrust and fear immigrants. While American is a diverse nation our national identity is based off of an, us versus them, mentality.
Historically our country has been an anti-immigrant society. In “Fathers Knew Best”, Jefferson stated that immigrants would only introduce discord and confusion. He said that they would “bring with them the principles of the government they leave” (Woods 232). Woods is saying that immigration has no good outcome. Mass immigration will eventually get out of hand and our nation will be so over populated that it will not be a safe county. George Washington also had no positive outcome on encouraging immigration. Washington also said “…there is no need of encouragement of immigration…” (Woods 234). He felt that letting them immigrate into our country and bring their beliefs, principles and habits with them, would have no positive outcome.
