The alignment or orientation of an object is how the piece is situated in space and how it sits relative to other objects. Stonehenge, Sanchi Hill, and the Ka’bah are three architectural structures whose orientations/alignments shape the visual and physical interactions of spectators. Stonehenge was oriented several miles north of Salisbury, located at 51.179 North, 1.8265 West. Despite more than 5,000 years of historic presence, its orientation and alignment have remained the same throughout its existence. The emphasis has been the structure’s main focus since its creation. It is in this direction in which the midsummer sun rises and shines along the avenue and the heel stone. Careful calculations and years of observation allowed the Windmill Hill, Beaker, and Wessex cultures to align stones and holes into a calendar, which is now over six thousands years old. The Aubrey, Y, and Z holes are believed to be tools for tracking the suns progress throughout the year.
