According to the arthritis foundations web site, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) is an autoimmune disease that causes joint inflammation and stiffness. People that contract the disease are most likely to have symptoms appear before the age of sixteen and it can affect any joint in the body. There are three types of JRA, Pauciarticular, Systemic and Polyarticular. The first form, Pauciarticular, is the most common form and can affect up to four joints, usually large ones like the knees. Thirty percent of people with RJA have the second form , Polyarticular. In Polyarticular arthritis, five or more joints are affected, usually smaller ones, such as the hands or feet. However, larger joints can also be affected. Polyarticular is usually symmetrical, affecting the same joints on both sides of the body. Systemic JRA, also known as stills disease, is the least common form. About twenty percent of people with JRA have this type.
