Sarah Orne Jewett is noted for her short story entitled �A White Heron�, written to portray a nine year old girl�s response to the changes in her small world when moved from an urban neighborhood into nature. In this story, Sarah Orne Jewett uses genders to signify evil throughout the story. She depicts the conflict in a young girl, Sylvia, caught between her feelings for a male hunter and the welfare of a bird, the white heron. The conflict runs havoc on her feelings.
