A scar is not only a physical mark on the body, but can also be a memory that is not forgotten. Scars are wounds to a person that influence the way they live their life after they have been scarred. The novel Beloved by Toni Morrison contains many characters who have had experiences significant enough to leave a mark on them. Similarly, during the Civil War, many people were also scarred. After a scar forms, it will continue to impair the judgment of the person who is scarred until they are able to make the decision to help others overcome their scars. A scar forms when a very significant event, such as being beaten or abused, occurs. In the case of Beloved, Sethe has a series of wounds in the shape of a chokecherry tree. These scars are from when Schoolteacher, the cruel master of Sweet Home, beat her after she told him that his nephews raped her. Sethe says, �When it closed it made a tree.
