The Battle of the Somme, from 1st July 1916 to 18th November 1916 is one of the most significant events in the First World War. It is known for being a terrible battle with enormous losses for all countries involved. The Battle of the Somme was fought in the area around the River Somme in northern France. In February 1916 the Germans began attacking the town of Verdun to try and capture some important French forts which were in the area. For six months this battle continued with both Germany and France losing 800 000 men. By the summer of 1916 the French army was extremely weak. Douglas Haig launched the offensive in the Somme region as an attempt to relieve the pressure on Verdun and to support the French army. The objective of the British offensive in the Somme was to gain territory and by doing this, forcing the Germans away from Verdun. Though in the whole attack the Allies only gained about 7 miles of land. A secondary objective was to exploit the weaknesses of the German army.
