Fantasy vs. Actuality Although the Ancient world of Greece seems like something from our imagination, it is closer to reality than suggested. The Odyssey is a classic epic poem written by Homer that tells about the travels of Odysseus after his conquest in Troy. The main character, Odysseus, has been away from his home town Ithaca for about twenty years – ten of them spent fighting in the Trojan War, and ten years trying to get home. Odysseus left behind his wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus, to battle the suitors and send them out of their home. Odysseus takes his long journey with many trials and tribulations and arrives home with even more problems to fix. Growing up in the ancient Greece society would be a culture shock for most. Our religious beliefs are the main difference. In Greece, the society believes that there are many gods. There is a god for everything in the world.
