The game of baseball started to take shape in the early to mid 1800s. Nobody knows exactly how the game of baseball was created, but many historians will agree that the game of baseball is based on an English game called “rounders,” which is very similar to baseball. In rounders, there are four bases, a pitcher and a batter, so the similarities between the two games are obvious. Prior to the Civil War, many towns were forming baseball teams, and even some of the larger cities were forming their own baseball clubs. The first recorded baseball game was played in 1846. The Knickerbocker Baseball Club of New York City lost to the New York Baseball Club in a game at the Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey.
