Think of the Child: Divorce Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

As time progresses, things change for sometimes the better or for the worse. Barbara Dafoe Whitehead, the author of the article “Rethinking Divorce”, quotes, “During the past 30 years, divorce has moved from the margin of society into the mainstream”(379). Divorce has been around for 300 years, evidently slowly changing the way American’s view the concept of separation between two people. It is no longer having both mother and father bringing happiness to their child, but it is now the happiness brought from the individual parent. I agree with Barbara Dafoe Whitehead when she states, “The characteristics that are most essential to making one’s way in a dynamic world—initiative, resourcefulness, independence, risk taking—are the very characteristics that children are less likely to acquire if they lose permanence and security in their primary family bonds”(381). However, what Whitehead did not specify are the effects divorce has on children. A stable child needs to understand and accept who he or she is.
