Many feminists speak and write about both literal and metaphorical location in an attempt to find their place in the world and within the universal category of “woman.” This location can be exact, as in a specific town or state, for example. It can also be used to define a position, like the location of a feminist within the female ranks, or the location of the African American woman within the American culture. Adrienne Rich uses this theory of location in her “Notes Toward a Politics of Location.” Rich acknowledged that she spoke and wrote from a specific place in the North American context, stating that “a place on the map is also a place in history within which as a woman, a Jew, a lesbian, a feminist, I am created and trying to create” (). By stating this, Rich is questioning the universality of women and defining her own location in the world as more than just a point on the map.
