Many feminists speak and write about both literal and metaphorical location in an attempt to find their place in the world and within the universal category of �woman.� This location can be exact, as in a specific town or state, for example. It can also be used to define a position, like the location of a feminist within the female ranks, or the location of the African American woman within the American culture. Adrienne Rich uses this theory of location in her �Notes Toward a Politics of Location.� Rich acknowledged that she spoke and wrote from a specific place in the North American context, stating that �a place on the map is also a place in history within which as a woman, a Jew, a lesbian, a feminist, I am created and trying to create� (). By stating this, Rich is questioning the universality of women and defining her own location in the world as more than just a point on the map.
