Macbeth Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In many works of literature, sleep is meant to reflect a peaceful state of mind and content nature. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, Macbeth is often sleepless with guilt. He has a guilty conscience that will never rest. The first reference to sleep and sleeplessness comes about in Act I, scene 3 (lines 20-21) when the first witch curses the sailor's wife because she did not receive chestnuts. The woman's poor husband will encounter great winds brought by the witches. "Sleep shall neither night or day / Hang upon his penthouse lid." The witch will never let him rest (311). The next instance of sleep occurs in Act I, scene 7 (line 67). Lady Macbeth is trying to convince her husband to commit the murder of King Duncan. She says, "A limbeck only; when in swinish sleep / Their drenched natures lies as in a death…" As the guards lie in a contented sleep, they will be framed for the great murder of the king (324). Act II is full of references to sleep. In scene I, Banquo speaks to Fleance of "cursed thoughts" that keep him from a peaceful rest (Scene 1, line 7). Later in the sam......
