I. Critique of Skinner Burrhus Frederic Skinner’s philosophical positions were monistic in terms of epistemology. He believed that the senses interacted directly with the physical world, and that there was no distinction between the knower and the known. Skinner’s views were also deterministic in regard to behavior, because he believed that all behavior was the product of contingencies. If one can control the contingencies surrounding an organism’s behavior, the behavior itself could thus be controlled. With regard to positivism, Skinner turned away from the tenets of logical positivism and instead embraced pure positivism: he searched for facts alone, and then interpreted those facts through induction, rather than allowing deductive theories to guide his research (Hergenhahn, 2001). Skinner’s views on ethics, as illustrated in Walden Two, tended towards a socialized system of community based on principles of behavior analysis.
