Cal By Bernard MacLaverty Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Bernard Mac Laverty’s ‘Cal’ focuses on the emotional torment and political victimization of the character Cal McCluskey, a young working class catholic living in a protestant housing estate in Northern Ireland during the “troubles”. Mac Laverty portrays a compact but grueling insight into the conflict of Northern Ireland in the 80’s and by exploring such techniques like setting, characterization and plot which allows a fresh outlook to be gained into the victims of this political war providing an insight to the torture, isolation and guilt they face during this period.
‘Cal’ is set in the beautiful countryside of Northern Ireland a picturesque sight which goes unappreciated by the main character. When asked on page 117 of the book by the character Marcella,
“Does looking at that not do something for you? The countryside,”
He replies,
“Not really. I was born here. I’ve looked at it all my life”.
Cal’s dislike for the setting can be witnessed right at the beginning of the book when he visits the abattoir where his father ‘Shamie’ works. A place Cal worked until recently ......
