Bernard Mac Laverty�s �Cal� focuses on the emotional torment and political victimization of the character Cal McCluskey, a young working class catholic living in a protestant housing estate in Northern Ireland during the �troubles�. Mac Laverty portrays a compact but grueling insight into the conflict of Northern Ireland in the 80�s and by exploring such techniques like setting, characterization and plot which allows a fresh outlook to be gained into the victims of this political war providing an insight to the torture, isolation and guilt they face during this period. �Cal� is set in the beautiful countryside of Northern Ireland a picturesque sight which goes unappreciated by the main character. When asked on page 117 of the book by the character Marcella, �Does looking at that not do something for you? The countryside,� He replies, �Not really. I was born here. I�ve looked at it all my life�. Cal�s dislike for the setting can be witnessed right at the beginning of the book when he visits the abattoir where his father �Shamie� works.
