Edna St. Vincent Millay is a well-known American poet that lived and worked during the 20th century. �The Courage That My Mother Had� is an example of her work. Edna was born on February 22, 1892 in Rockland, Main to Henry Tolman and Cora Buzzelle. Her mother worked as a singer and as a practical nurse. He father was a school principal and latter on a superintendent (�Edna St. Vincent Millay DISCovering�). She along with two sisters and her mother moved to Camden, Main when she was eight. She spent the first 20 years of her life there. Also when she was eight her parents received a divorce (Gerstenberger 725). As a teen Edna wrote many poems that she submitted to the magazine St. Nicholas.
