Emile Durkheim Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Although many philosophers have pointed out the existence of an intricate and vastly interwoven relationship between the individual and society as a whole, it is not until Emile Durkheim comes into the scene that a tenable argument would be created. Durkheim, a French philosopher and sociologist of the late nineteenth century, realizes that things ha labels “social facts” along with the division of labor are what create this delicate and complex relationship between the part and the whole. Focusing on the definition of a social fact first, one can then wander along a more guided path into Durkheim’s “Division of Labor” article. In his article “What is a Social Fact?,” Durkheim not only defines a social fact but also goes beyond and applies his definition upon, what was at the time, modern society. He defines a social fact as any and all of the societal forces that, quite literally, control the individual’s actions and thoughts.
