Long Live Neo-Realism Towards the end of World War II, when the air raid sirens ceased to scream and the enemy bombs ceased to fall, Italy awoke to find itself enveloped in crime and social unrest and with a cinematic school that continued to churn out meaningless melodramas with little relevance to the common people. Out of this blindfolded doom a new cinematic movement emerged that would eventually become known as neo-realism (Sorlin,1996, p.59). It didn�t last very long, it didn�t do very well at the box office and it didn�t produce many films. However, neo-realism was, and still is, undoubtedly one of the most influential periods of cinema in all of filmmaking history. A worthy example of its influence can be seen by examining Roberto Rosselini�s, Open City and Night of the Shooting Stars, made by the Taviani brothers.
