Good Night Mr. Tom Character Sketches: Differences between the Book and Movie In the book Good Night Mr. Tom, the author, Michelle Magorian vividly describes each character, their individual moods and the way they communicate with others. Three of the main characters, Tom Oakley, William Beech and Zachariah Little are great examples of this. When the movie version is made of the book, it is told so that the characters were poorly illustrated. Compared to the movie, the book is more descriptive and detailed. To begin, the first character that is described badly is Mr. Tom. The novel has Mr. Tom�s character as a gruff old man that softened when Willie comes to stay at his house. In the movie, the actor who played Tom is stern and grumpy, and stays like that through most of the movie. Almost returning Willie back from where he came, and scolding him for playing his organ are scenes in the movie that portray this. For example, the movie shows a very small scene where Tom teaches Willie how to write. The movie producers are trying to give the viewer a feel about how nice Mr. Tom ......
