Jean- Paul Sartre once stated that, �it is up to the individual to choose the life they think best.� When this principle is applied to popular-culture icons such as superheroes, it becomes apparent that how one acts is influenced by one�s personal life experiences. This reaction defines the meaning and purpose of vigilante behaviour. Such conduct allows superheroes to return order to a corrupt society by taking the law into their own hands. This definement of purpose is most evident when looking at Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman. As an innocent child, Wayne witnessed the brutal murder of his parents. This experience caused him to act to rid the world of injustice. When an individual�s purpose becomes defined, their actions then also become morally defined. Vigilantism can be morally justified in a society where the law is nothing but a shade of grey as a result of corruption in government and niceties now given to offenders.
