Technology plays an integral part in all our lives today, from ATM machines to gain immediate access to our money, to PDAs (personal data access) devices which provide us a constant connection to our cell phones, emails and contact information. But the question is always there in the background, nudging us, making us think, is it all good? In the short story “Virtual Romance” by Paulina Borsook, she delves into the work place world of virtual, immediate access to another person. “Virtual Romance” is written in first person, and uses the theme of technology and conferences between professional people as the theme, along with of course, virtual romaine. The character is Justine Mergner and she is in the technology field, but is not a technology geek. She mistrusts many of the technology communication devices used today , such as faxes, emails and laptops, preferring to use the old trusted standbys of regular phones and letter writing.
