Ignaz Semmelweis is not a well-known name in the modern medical community but his discovery greatly affects the current practice of medicine. Ignaz Semmelweis could be considered the father of hand washing and sanitation. Semmelweis was the first to propose a sanitation method to prevent the transfer of bacteria between patients in an obstetrics ward. Ignaz Semmelweis was born on July 1st, 1818 to Jozsef Semmelweis and Terezia Muller as one of their ten children. During his childhood his family resided in an area of western Hungary that would become a part of Austria after World War I. At the age of 11, after his completion of elementary school, Ignaz attended the Royal Catholic University Gymnasium. Once he graduated from the gymnasium, Ignaz attended courses for two years in Philosophy at Pest University (Antall, 74). He then enrolled as a law student at the University of Vienna in 1837, as per his father�s wishes.
