In Tim Winton�s series of short stories he details the life of Jerra and Rachel laden with the many hardships of their lives. Both Jerra and Rachel feel the strain at different times throughout the collection. Their support at times for each other can sometimes be limited as depicted by Winton. but their love for each other holds them together keeping their minimum of two, which ultimately becomes the overall theme of the saga. The consolations that Jerra and Rachel receive are sometimes non reflective of the hard work they put in. Winton interestingly takes an ordinary person and describes their ordinary situations. The opening story entitled �Forest Winter� begins off the collection with the first example of hardship in the Nilsam family. The event involves a bit of horrible irony. The very item that saves Rachel�s life near almost ends Jerra�s. Jerra works incredibly hard to save the life of his wife, yet what he receives in consolation does not add up.
