Topic: A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH EMPEROR PENGUINS CLASSIFICATION: Kingdom: Animalia - The Emperor Penguins inhabit the Antarctic continent. Phylum: Chordata - The Emperor Penguins body is connected by having, a notochord, a hollow dorsal nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, an endostyle, and a muscular tail extending past the anus. They are considered to be Vertebrata animals which is the largest subphylum of chordates. Class: Aves - The Emperor Penguins head and wings are black, white abdomen, bluish grey back, and the bill is purplish pink. On the sides of the neck there are two golden circular stripes. A male Emperor Penguin has an abdominal fold called the "brood pouch" between its legs and lower abdomen. They have a thick coat of feathers that insulate their entire body except the legs. The feathers provide a waterproof layer around the penguin's body. Order: Sphenisciformes -The Emperor Penguins are an order of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere. Family: Spheniscidae - Emperor Penguins are unusual birds.
