Fuel sources have been present on this great Earth since the beginning of time, but throughout history we have witnessed advances in technology that have given us the ability to store, transport, and burn fuel for energy. In 1898 Rudolph Diesel, a German inventor became famous for his discovery of a new fuel source. That year he first made his findings public at the World Fair in Paris and some say that this was the first documented use of biodiesel. However the engine that he used to perform his findings on ran off of virgin peanut oil, which is not biodiesel.
What is Biodiesel?
Biodiesel actually refers to the alkyl esters that are produced from a transesterfication reaction between the oil or fat and an alcohol. This makes it different than virgin peanut oil because a chemical process, which removes the glycerol from the oil, produces it. It is defined as a renewable energy fuel from vegetable or animal derived oil that has been chemically modified to reduce its viscosity.
