Marijuana is the illegal drug most often used in the United States. Since 1991, lifetime marijuana use has almost doubled among 8th-10th grade students, and increased by 33% among high school seniors. Research from the National Institute of Drug Abuse shows that accompanying this upward pattern of use is significant erosion in antidrug perceptions and knowledge among young people today. As the number of young people who use marijuana has increased, the number of people who view the drug as harmful has decreased. First off you may ask the question, what is marijuana? Marijuana is a green, brown, or gray mixture of dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the hemp plant, also known as Cannabis Sativa. Strong forms of cannabis include sinsemilla, hashish (or hash for short), and hash oil. All forms of Cannabis are mind altering drugs. This is because they contain THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol.)
