COMPARISON AND CONTRAST ESSAY between 1984 by George Orwell and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood The novel 1984 written by George Orwell (India -25/06/1903 - London -21/01/1950) and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (Ottawa -1939 -) are both anti-utopian, dystopian novels. Nevertheless, they also show noticeable contrasted and comparison elements. Utopia, “an imaginary and indefinitely remote place” also “a place of ideal perfection especially in laws, government, and social conditions” and “an impractical scheme for social improvement” (Merriam-Webster dictionary), was conceived by Sir Thomas More in 1516 as a title of his fictive work. The word utopia has its origin from the Greek word ou-topia and eu-topia. Dystopia (from Greek dys-topia, “bad place”) and anti-utopia are obviously the opposite of this definition. By imagining fictional anti-utopian governments, writers in general, for example Aldous Huxley with Brave New World or Ray Bradbury with Fahrenheit 451, criticize contemporary political and social situations to warn us about developing threats to ......
