An ethical officer is an officer who will consciously make good decisions that is in the best interest of the department and fellow officers. An unethical officer is an officer who will make bad decisions that might benefit him, but hurt others, or the department. Unethical decisions are normally made because the officer does not think he will get caught. I don�t think that an officer accepting a free or discounted meal is appropriate or inappropriate. If the store or restaurant insists on giving the officer a meal free of charge, the officer should just be grateful. I think that the officer should accept only if on duty and in uniform. The decision of receiving free or discounted meals will become unethical if the officer takes advantage of the offer. In my opinion, officers should not be classified as ethical or unethical. They may have different decisions to make while on the job, some may be ethical and some may not. If an officer makes one bad decision, that doesn�t classify him as a bad or unethical officer.
